Hi!

I am in the early stages of planning a figurevignette with a Sherman backdrop. The figures are from SS Hitler Jugend div. in Normadie, but I am unsure about what type of sherman I should use!

British or American? Firefly? M4A1, M4A2, M4? Short or long barrel? Cast or welded hull?
Do any of you guys have a tip?

Thank you!

Hi Sverre,

try this PDF file:

http://www.mod.uk/NR/rdonlyres/ADADD5C6-9F34-4A94-AD03-5C915E25AD51/0/ww2_caen.pdf

it contains some info on the fighting at Caen between the 7th Armoured Division and the 12. SS. Also with some pictures.

Sverre,

have you considered the Tamiya Cromwell or Churchill as a backdrop BTW?

Thank you for your help, Øyvind!

Yes I have thought about a Churchill or a Cromwell, but I have found out that I want to use the high profile of the Sherman with its turret.
Both the Cromwell and the Churchill doesnt quite fit the scene I have in mind, the Churcill because of the wide area between the fenders and the turret, and the Cromwell because of its fenders. The Sherman is a bit more compact along the sides! Smiler
But thank you very much for the tip! Thumb It makes me think a bit more of composition and such!

At the moment I am leaning towards a Firefly but I appreciate everyones comments, thoughts, ideas and input!

Hi there,

I know it´s an old topic, but I´ve just registered here.
The HJ Division fought the British forces in Normandy. Your best bet would be to use either an M4A2 or M4A4. The latter can be a 75mm gun tank or a Firefly. Give me some time to dig up the references and I´ll let you know more.

Hi Martin!
The vignette is still in the planning stages, so all input and info is great!

I have setteled for a Firefly, but if you have any information about units and such it would be of great interest!

Thanks!!

Hi Sverre,

Firefly? Nice  Gliser
I think you'll want to get one of the Tasca kits. I've been building one up over the last month or so.

Excellent kit but a little TLC it can be improved.

Hi Sverre,

I've been looking in my references. 12th SS 'Hitlerjugend' mostly fought against Canadian troops in Normandy.
Here's some good information on the operation fought by Canadian units in Normandy.
http://www.canadiansoldiers.com/history/campaigns/northwesteurope/normandy.htm

Here's the order of battle for the II Canadian Corps in Normandy:
    * II Canadian Corps (January 15, 1943 to June 25, 1945)
o 2nd Canadian Corps Defence Company (Lorne Scots)
          o 2nd Canadian Infantry Division
          o 3rd Canadian Infantry Division
          o 4th Canadian (Armoured) Division
o 1st Polish Armoured Division, August 1944 to May 1945
o 15th (Scottish) Infantry Division, January to March, 1945
          o 51st (Highland) Infantry Division, August 1944
          o 2nd Canadian Armoured Brigade
o 33rd Armoured Brigade, August 1944, Operation TOTALIZE
          o 1st Belgian Infantry Brigade, April 1945
o Royal Netherlands Motorized Infantry Brigade, August 1944
          o 1st Czechoslovak Armoured Brigade, October-November 1944

The red units are most appropriate for you.

Hope this helps,

MartinD
